AI (artificial intelligence) composition systems are being marketed toward a new category of ‘functional’ music – music created and valued for its use in soundtrack, gaming, popular song generation, commercial and recreational contexts.
These systems can quickly and cheaply generate high quantities of ‘functional’ music, with a decreasing necessity of human creativity and musical knowledge/practice in its production process.
The trend continues… ever-expanding elements of the musical craft are being simulated by technology. And yet, unquantifiable aspects of the creative art process remain undefinable and beyond computer simulation. These artistic aspects seem to be of diminishing importance to the production of ‘functional’ music.
If enduring value has anything to do with scarcity, those who dedicate the time and devotion to their artistic process will create the rare, exceptional aesthetic works in a future filled with ‘functional’ music simulations.
